great news, I love these sort of mysteries, sometimes it's like pulling teeth getting all the data but we won through in the end! Someone should write "an ode" to living with hot water cylinders!!

FYI this is the anode i took out, you can see most of the sacrificial part is gone and the steel rod at the center has eroded about halfway
