Very well-fed feral cat is my first impression* too. Dog prints tend to have a claw mark at the end of each toe.

*Geddit? You're welcome.

Don't ask me, it was on its side when I got here.

Hi
That was my first though.
I have seen a black cat around here twice and I know that none of the neighbors have cats...they all hate feral cats.
But what else could it be?
Deer..pig..what else is there?
Thanks
Richard

It's definitely feline. Possums are smaller and different, more spread; dogs, as HD says, have a claw and slightly oval toe prints, not round like cats.

We caught one this morning in a modified Timms. A little rabbit met its end in a DOC200 the day before, so got chopped up and put in the other traps as bait. Hadn't even seen that cat but they're always around.

+1 for Cat print, dogs tend to have quite a distinct X shape in their print, and cats have a sort of trilobe-shape at that back of their pad which shows in the photos.

That's a big kitty if I say so myself. We've got cats, and as well-fed as they are, their paw prints aren't nearly as big. You are looking at a feline, for sure. Sounds like the notorious panther stories.

Out of interest, here is a photo of leopard prints (look and sizing). Similar in stature to a puma/panther.

HI
Still here Ruth.
Getting ready for my first snow storm in my new place.

I have not seen anymore prints or the one feral cat I saw earlier.
Had the driveway scraped and it has dried out quite a bit so no mud around right now to take prints.

Will look at setting traps foe feral cats once snow storm passes.
Got 5 possums so far...suprised at how big they were.
Not going to bother with camera just yet.

Thnaks
Richard

Make sure you use live capture traps for cats especially if you have neighbours nearby. You wouldn't want to fall out with neighbours if you destroy their tame moggy. Most captured cats soon show you if they are feral or not.

Did you know, that what you thought I said, was not what I meant :S
