Hi guys, just wondering if anyone had any natural solution to get rid of our Aristea problem. This plant has just totally taken over the majority of the grass on our property. Our property is 110acres with approx. 10acres in grass and the rest in bush. We have been using Glycosphate but it is so hard on the land we really want some natural solution. Tried smothering them, using vinegar and salt, nothing seems to work. Any suggestions welcomed.

Salt and vinegar will be just as hard on the land!

Have you ever done soil testing to determine what is or isn't present there? Where weeds take over, there's usually some imbalance which allows them to do so. If you do some testing, try to avoid the places you've poured vinegar or salt. I'd suggest that would be a good first step. The long-term fix may be a matter of getting some lime or fert on the grass areas - I presume they're pasture for animals?

These are bulbs so they wont be that easy to get rid of. Where in the country are you as these are very warm climate bulbs on the whole, or so I thought

Ooh can you get some good photos please when it's in flower and can be easily seen? Will PM you my email address :D

The bulb thing is the issue. It will laugh at glyphosate, unfortunately...you need metsulferon (Escort or Meturon etc) which will kill out wherever you spray BUT will do what is needed which is get rid of the aristea - at least those bulbs that have plant material above ground.

There is no easy option, unfortunately...:(

Have you considered using a flamethrower?

Kiwi, your on to it.
A flame thrower I would imagine would have little or no impact on bulbs, they can just die back and re sprout

Aristea Ecklonii is what we have round here. Good results with Escort or if you havent won lotto Meturon from Agpro.
The council says mix in some glyphosate with it but I don't want to kill the grass

Still takes about 6-7 weeks to see them start to die
