Chester was created by Hagabel
Chester (almost 14 yr old lab) is coming to the end of his earthly life this week as his back legs are not doing well and he is having some issues resulting from kidney failure. He has a good(and interesting) life and he will be sorely missed. :(

2 crazy boys, 2 lab puppies, 1 Dexter Heifer and her calf, Angus.

Thoughts are with you, take heart from the fact that you are able to do it for him.

I had to do the same with my almost 16 year old Lab a few years ago. I just read this poem again the other day which someone gave me at the time. My current old girl in 12 and a half now, and it brought the memories back that it won't be too long before we have to confront this again.

From a Friend to a Friend

You’re giving me a special gift,
So sorrowfully endowed,
And through these last few cherished days,
Your courage makes me proud.
But really love is knowing
When your best friend is in pain,
And understanding earthly acts
Will only be in vain.
So looking deep into your eyes,
Beyond into your soul,
I see in you the magic, that will
Once more make me whole.
The strength that you possess,
Is why I look to you today,
To do this thing which must be done,
For it’s the only way.
That strength is why I’ve followed you,
And chose you as my friend,
And why I loved you all these years….
My partner to the end.
Please, understand just what this gift,
You’re giving means to me,
It gives me back the strength I’ve lost,
And all my dignity.
You take a stand on my behalf,
For that is what friends do.
And know that what you do is right,
For I believe it too.
So one last time, I breathe your scent,
And through your hand I feel,
The courage that’s within you,
To now grant me this appeal.
Cut the leash that holds me here,
Dear friend and let me run,
Once more a strong and steady dog,
My pain and struggle done.
And don’t despair my passing,
For I won’t be far away,
Forever here within your heart,
A memory I will stay.
I’ll be there watching over you,
Your ever faithful friend,
And in your memories I’ll run,
…a young dog once again.

Labrador lover for yonks, breeder of pedigree Murray Grey cattle for almost as long, and passionate poultry person for more years than I care to count.

I feel for you Hagabel. As the moving poem that Sue has posted says the memories of Chester will be forever with you. Take time for your grieving and ignore people who try and say he was only a dog - we all know differently.

Hi Hagabel, I can relate to what you're going through. Our ancient lab is starting to get a bit unsteady on his back legs, although he's still able to pootle around and enjoy life. But I know that at some point things will change and we'll have to make the hard decision. It never gets any easier.

Thinking of you and your darling boy, Chester. I know you'll treasure each day you still have him.

Sue, that poem made me want to howl. It's beautiful.
Cheers, Mich.

Good exercise for the heart is to bend down and help someone up. Anon.
